Kerri Green and Josh Brolin embrace in a scene from the film "The Goonies," shot at Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma County. You’ll find Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park, a collection of rugged coastline, bluffs and beaches stretching about 20 miles from Bodega Bay to just north of Jenner. These beaches, however, are not the kind meant for swimming - the surf here is very rough and, at times, deadly. Where the ending of ‘The Goonies’ was filmed Many signs warn of “unsafe” surf and caution visitors to stay out of the water. On a recent visit, the tide was high, and currents were strong, keeping me tight to the cliffs as I followed the decades-old steps of “The Goonies.” The beach itself is located near the mouth of the Russian River. It’s home to a colony of harbor seals, which is why dogs aren’t allowed. The cast reportedly stayed in nearby Bodega Bay during filming, which took place on Jan. In setting out to find where the movie’s last pivotal scenes were shot, much research was required. The film follows a group of adolescent outcasts who band together to stop the foreclosure of their homes by tracking down the long-lost treasure of a pirate named One-Eyed Willy. According to Spielberg, the allure of the movie is that it’s an “ ordinary fantasy,” which is probably why it’s become a cult classic: “Goonies” is cinematic fun and adventure at its best. The same spots where the kids reunited with their parents and watched Willy’s ship sail into the Pacific Ocean were just feet from the parking lot. (Fans of the movie may remember Data’s warm embrace with his family during the Goat Rock Beach scenes.) The unique stacks in the foreground as the ship let loose peppered the coast, including rock formations filmed behind the Goonies as they ran up the beach. The hike there was just a few hundred yards from the lot over several large branches, rocks and some mud. How Goat Rock Beach affected ‘The Goonies’ productionĮlements of a different kind played a role in shaping the scene back in the mid-1980s. Strong winds and a setting sun “absolutely” provided additional hurdles for the crew in setting up the shots, makeup artist Michael Mills told SFGATE. Mills, an Oscar-nominated makeup artist, has worked on notable films like “Blade Runner,” “Crimson Tide,” the “Back to the Future” franchise and “Face/Off,” among many others. He came on as an uncredited makeup artist 17 days into “The Goonies” production when filmmakers were unhappy with the look of Sloth, played by former Oakland Raiders defensive end John Matuszak. “You’re having to create a complexion with your ability as a painter," Mills explained in a phone interview.
